One Thread Textile Art

I am obsessed with the reality of a single thread that, without question and with our combined strength, holds us all together. I experience this in my day to day living and demonstrate it in my artwork. I am drawn to fiber… painting on it, weaving it, cutting it up and putting it back together, creating wet-felted wool fabrics and most recently, with great joy, creating organic sculptural embroidered art. It’s just thread. This one thread is very powerful. It joins us but also creates open space for us to be ourselves while we support one another. The only question this thread asks is: “How can I help?” Welcome to my adventure!

Ellen Few Anderson is a painter of Abstraction who has been living and painting year-round in Westport, N.Y. since 2006, (although she's been coming here for summers all her life.) After 4 years in Massachusetts, her family moved to Japan for 3 years. She attended 3rd grade back in Westport. Then her family moved to Germany for 2 years, to Maryland for 2 years, and especially exciting, to Rome, Italy for 6 years (for her, grades 7 through 12.)  Her early involvement with art came from her parents: her father a cultural attaché in the US Embassy, her mother an art historian.)

At Duke University, Ellen majored in Art Studio and Art History, and after teaching for 30 years, she finally had the chance in 2006 to devote herself full time to being a painter.

The abstract paintings in her current series are mostly on long narrow vertical canvases, (72" x 24"), and suggest glimpses of meadows, mountains, lakes and the sky through partly open doors.  In a reference to Japanese scrolls, they also include a calligraphic look, created by a thickly textured black underlayer. Then, often with a palette knife, she adds broad horizontal bands of quickly applied layers of paint, sometimes in defined sections of color that stretch from one side of the surface to the other, sometimes leaving only a residual glow.

Born out of a deep concern for environmental conservation, my landscapes reflect the experience and shared love of the outdoors and exploring the wildness of nature. Many of the images I paint are a result of collaborative work with individuals and organizations such as The Nature Conservancy and Adirondack Land Trust, Champlain Area Trails (CATS), The Audubon Society, UNESCO, The Eddy Foundation, and The Adirondack Council. Since 1986 I’ve been working collaboratively with these organizations to identify unique biological webs and ecosystems. I then access a site by foot, boat, or canoe to draw and paint in the field. Through this process of research and physical immersion into the landscape I integrate site specific ecological and anthropological information into each image, fusing my artistic response to nature’s beauty with the geological forms and living organisms that make each site unique. My work is represented in private and corporate collections in the United States, Canada, Asia, and Europe.

The images in my studio reflect the efforts of the many visionary persons who live and work to preserve the Adirondack Park and the UNESCO Champlain – Adirondack Biosphere Reserve. The art in my studio is created and offered with deep gratitude to natures’ keepers, protectors, and kindred spirits.

I have been an abstract painter for more than 50 years. I believe that my work is a visual diary, revealing responses to both the natural and social worlds. I look to abstraction—whether in creating my own works or contemplating those of others—for evidence of a passionate response to life. Searching out the abstract present in all artworks, I take in thoughts of color and line, movement and proportion, surface and scale, ultimately asserting that abstraction is visual philosophy—however intuitive and silent it may appear.

Throughout the work, I employ both density as well as openness as the painting’s form of contrast and dichotomy, a theme central to all my art. In these paintings, I welcome the simplicity and sparseness of the gessoed ground as integral to the dynamics of lines and shape of force. These works are metaphors of external and internal passion and are inspired in particular by my experiencing the light of a hayfield surrounding my Westport home and studio.

I received a BFA from the SUNY College of Art and Design at Alfred University and a MFA in Painting from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. My work has been exhibited nationally in 32 solo exhibitions in 9 different states and over 100 group shows. Over 80 works have been acquired by 26 museums and institutional collections in 11 states. I am included in the “Feminist Art Base,” the Brooklyn Museum’s website of the Elizabeth A. Sackler Center for Feminist Art.

Ive always loved painting and bringing outside, in. I love plants and flowers, on paper or canvas. Making anything, really, is what fuels me, especially if flowers are involved. I’m primarily an abstract artist and the Flower shop has given me my own space to showcase these things, as I see them.
